The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, launched a significant initiative on Thursday aimed at supporting wheat farmers in Kano State.
During an event at the Aggregation Centre in Alkamawa village, Kyari, represented by Isa Hotoro, the State Coordinator for the Ministry, announced the distribution of subsidized agricultural inputs to over 6,000 farmers. This effort is part of the Federal Government's special program designed to enhance wheat production in the region.
Kyari highlighted that the government is providing these inputs with a substantial subsidy of 75%, requiring farmers to cover only 25% of the costs.
Each participating farmer will receive three bags of fertilizer and one bag of 50kg wheat seeds, amounting to a total cost of N111,000 for their share of the package.
The minister emphasized that this initiative is expected to enable farmers to cultivate approximately 3,000 hectares across 12 designated clusters in Bunkure, Ajingi, and Gaya Local Government Areas.
Farmers expressed their gratitude for this support, noting that rising input and transportation costs had previously forced many to reduce their cultivated areas.
For instance, farmer Yakubu Ibrahim shared his experience of cutting back from five hectares to just two due to economic pressures.
They also urged the government to ensure timely delivery of these inputs so they can prepare adequately for the planting season.
