At least 37 deaths have been recorded in the current cholera outbreak that has hit 30 states across Nigeria, including Lagos and Ogun states.

In Lagos, the state has recorded 401 suspected cholera cases and 21 deaths, up from the previous 15 fatalities. The outbreak is centered in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa areas. Health officials warn the disease is highly aggressive and contagious, with the potential for widespread impact, especially during the rainy season.

In Ogun state, one death and 14 cases have been reported, with a 62-year-old woman dying after contracting the disease from her sick son.The affected local government areas in Ogun include Ota, Abeokuta South, Obafemi Owode, and Ijebu North.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has reported over 1,141 suspected and 65 confirmed cholera cases resulting in over 30 deaths across 96 local government areas in 30 states since January 1, 2024. Cholera is a severe, acute diarrheal infection caused by ingesting contaminated food or water, and can kill within hours if left untreated.
