Walegr8, a Nigerian musician based in the US (nee Austin Mukoro), is reinventing Afromusic for modern audiences in both the US and Nigeria through his blend of tradition and innovation.

Walegr8 was born into a family of entertainers, with parents Prince Liverpool Mukoro, a textile designer, and Agnes Mukoro, a fashion and music designer. Walegr8 began his career as a drummer and choreographer for Christiana Essien Igbokwe, the renowned Nigerian singer, whose group received praise from all over the world for its creative choreography.

After relocating to New York in 1997, the performer's act took on a transcontinental twist when he became the drummer and lead dancer for the Opiri Dance Troupe, which was started by Nigerian superstar Mike Okri. It was the first move toward bridging his audience in the US and Nigeria with innovative traditional African music.

Years of working with traditional dance troupes, such as the Urhobo Cultural Group, and partnerships with Nigerian and New York native cultural events, such as the New York Mermaid Parade (the latter made courtesy of his in-law Dick Zigun, an unelected Coney Island mayor and art patron), have made Walegr8 the significant figure he is today in the Afromusic and New York City landscape.

As he releases his most recent song, Never Give Up, a street anthem that embodies the Afrobeat vibe with an evangelistic undertone, he honors the rich history of Afrobeat while also making a contribution to its development.

In addition to Never Give Up, some of the artist's other well-known songs are Good Times and other projects in the works. As Afrobeat spreads throughout the world, he is at the forefront of redefining Afromusic for modern listeners.
