Veteran Singer and Activist Onyeka Onwenu Reportedly Dies At 72

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress, Ms Onyeka Onwenu is dead.

Ms Onwenu reportedly died on Tuesday evening at Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing after playing at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday party.

An eyewitness at the party confirmed the tragic news to our correspondents.

"It is quite sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at Mrs. Stella Okoli's birthday party today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and she slumped afterwards.

"She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn't make it," the unnamed eyewitness said.

Born on January 31, 1952, the late singer turned politician and rights activist, known as "The Elegant Stallion" by the Nigerian press, was once the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.

In 2013, she was appointed Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women's Development.

She will be remembered for her many songs, including "Wait for Me," which she sang with Juju maestro King Sunny Ade.

There has not been official confirmation from her family as at the time of filing this report.
