Osun Govt. Holds Another Education Summit

Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced plans for an education summit aimed at revitalizing Osun State's low public examination performance. To lead this initiative, Adeleke appointed Professor Oyesoji Aremu, who specializes in Counselling and Criminal Justice at the University of Ibadan's Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies.

Addressing the media in Osogbo, Aremu expressed dissatisfaction with the disregard of certain recommendations made by Prof Wole Soyinka in 2011, citing political reasons. He noted significant changes in the sector over the past twelve years and shared that the committee had gathered inputs from various entities and individuals. Aremu assured fairness in crafting recommendations for the state's benefit.

Meanwhile, Hon Dipo Eluwole, the Commissioner for Education, conveyed the state government's disappointment with education in Osun State. Eluwole revealed that the state holds an undesirable position as one of the lowest-ranked in the national public examination performance index for an extended period. The state also grapples with the highest number of out-of-school children in southwest Nigeria and an inadequate teacher-pupil ratio. Eluwole lamented these conditions, which he found inconsistent with the state's educational legacy.

The education summit's objectives include addressing the decline in school inspectors, teacher shortages, students' deviant behavior, and policies to establish child-friendly, safe, and motivating learning environments.

Responding to journalists' inquiries, Eluwole indicated that teachers previously employed under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola's administration and later disengaged by Adeleke's administration would have the opportunity to reapply. He assured that qualified individuals would be successful in the selection process.
