The leadership of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, University of Ibadan (SSANU), staged a peaceful protest at the main entrance of the institution on Tuesday.

The protesters blocked the busy UI-Sango road for nearly an hour, disrupting vehicular traffic. They carried placards with various demands, including the federal government honoring the 2009 agreement made with the unions, payment of earned allowances from 2013 to date, and the release of four months of withheld salaries.

The NASU chairman, Oluwafemi Michael Ogunlade, explained that the non-teaching staff unions, NASU and SSANU, had gone on strike for four months, while the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had an eight-month strike. He stated that the government paid ASUU but failed to honor the agreement with NASU and SSANU.

The SSANU chairman, Abiodun Rasaq Omisore, corroborated Ogunlade's statements, saying the unions had followed due process but the government had failed to honor the agreement. He warned that if the demands were not met, the unions would move to Abuja for a national protest on July 18, 2024.
