The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has issued a directive urging students in Nigerian universities to remain on campus during the upcoming nationwide protests scheduled from August 1 to 10, 2024.
This advisory aims to safeguard students' well-being amid concerns about potential risks associated with the demonstrations.
In a letter communicated through Chris Maiyaki, the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, the minister highlighted the government's awareness of citizens' rights to peaceful protest.
However, he expressed apprehension regarding the safety of students, staff, and university property during these events, which have been gaining momentum on social media under the hashtags ‘#EndBadGovernance,’ ‘#TinubuMustGo,’ and ‘#Revolution2024.’
The federal government, alongside police authorities, has urged young people to reconsider their participation in the planned protests. Prof. Mamman emphasized the necessity for Vice-Chancellors to implement proactive measures to ensure the security of the university community.
He advised that specific statements be issued to reassure students and staff of their safety during this period.
