First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has renamed the National Model Creche and Nursery in Abuja in honor of former First Lady Victoria Gowon on Tuesday as she officially opened the renovated facility.

The Dr. Mrs. Victoria Gowin National Creche and Nursery honors Mrs. Gowon's efforts as the former First Lady. The renovated nursery was designed to provide childcare services for working mothers.

The facility, which had been operational since April 2001, was destroyed in June 2011 following the bombing that shook the Abuja Police Headquarters.

The First Lady, who was represented by the Vice President's wife, Hajia Nana Shettima, stated that the Work Place Nursery program serves as a foundation for progress and a positive future for Nigeria in terms of enhanced bonding between mothers and their children.

“Let us continue to work together, supporting, empowering and uplifting one another, as we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society.

“This facility will serve as a preparatory ground for early childhood care, educational and recreational activities for the children, with the policy thrust to improve the Baby Friendly Initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.

“As a mother and an advocate for a better life for families, I am passionate about championing initiatives that empower and uplift the lives of our citizens, especially our women.

“The establishment of the Work Place Nursery stands as testament to this administration’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for working and nursing mothers,” she stated.

Earlier in her remarks, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs, stated that the facility will not only help enhance productivity but will also help children grow in a love-filled conducive environment.

She stated that her Ministry has been tasked with ensuring that women in the public and commercial sectors do not miss out on early parenthood due to their careers.

The Victoria Gowan National Creche and Nursery is located in Abuja's Asokoro District and serves nursing and working moms from both the public and private sectors.
