The Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday requested the presence of the lead British International School, Abuja, over a viral video concerning alleged bullying incidents at the school.

At the conference held in Abuja, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, stressed the government's committed stance against any form of persecution or intimidation within educational institutions.

The delegation from the school to the meeting was chaired by Mr. Abraham Ogunkanmbi, Head of School.

Sununu expressed deep concern over the trending video and promised that the government would take decisive actions to forestall recurrence in any institution of learning.

The minister selected a seven-member committee to thoroughly look into the circumstances surrounding the documented incidents. The committee’s mandate is to investigate the events as depicted in the videos and come up with an expanded investigation of other schools, using Lead British International School as a case study, to address broader social vices.

The minister emphasised the importance of setting up stronger bonds between school authorities and students. He said such a bond would facilitate responses to similar occurrences in the future, underscoring the importance of communication in resolving such problems.

The minister assured Nigerians of the government’s dedication to ensuring safety and protecting the rights of every student. He also reaffirmed the seriousness of the ministry's commitment to addressing and eliminating vices within the education sector.

Commenting, the Permanent Secretary, Didi Walson-Jack, inquired about the existence of an anonymous suggestion box at the school, where students could lodge their complaints discreetly.

While speaking on behalf of the delegation, Ogunkanmbi hinted that the school had launched investigations into the regrettable incident. He promised the ministry that suitable measures would be taken in response to the incidents, including disciplinary actions in accordance with the school’s policies.
