The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria has urged Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, the new Accountant-General of the Federation, to guarantee financial stability, accountability, and openness in the nation's financial system.

ICAN President Dr Innocent Okwuosa reportedly issued the statement on Tuesday in Abuja while paying the new Accountant-General of the Federation a courtesy visit.

Okwuosa said, “The position of the Accountant-General of Nigeria carries immense responsibilities, especially now that Nigeria stands at a pivotal juncture, facing a rapidly evolving economic landscape, changing regulatory frameworks coupled with endemic corruption.

“As the Accountant-General, you have the responsibility for maintaining the financial stability, transparency and accountability of the nation as a whole.”

However, he assured her that ICAN would continue to help her office to ensure efficient management of public funds, including the implementation, supervision, and evaluation of the national budget and other fiscal management requirements.

“We understand the enormity of your responsibilities and we will continue to encourage you and all our members in the public service and private sectors to adhere to the profession’s ethics to succeed,” he continued.

Okwuosa also took advantage of the chance to evaluate the ICAN Accountability Index for the AGF, one of the innovations developed by the institute to help the Federation promote accountability and openness.

He claims that it is an innovative and unique Index created to aid in the adoption of best practices in Public Financial Management at all levels of government.

Several national and international organizations, including the World Bank, the Public Expenditure and Financial Accountability, and the International Federation of Accountants, ratified the ICAN-AI, he continued, recognizing it as a fair and expert method of observing public financial management procedures.

The Accountant-General thanked the ICAN team for the honour bestowed upon her in her response.
