The Federal Government of Nigeria announced on Monday the establishment of centers nationwide where citizens can purchase a 50kg bag of rice for N40,000.
This initiative was disclosed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a press briefing following the Federal Executive Council meeting led by President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Idris emphasized that this effort is part of the Tinubu administration's broader strategy to alleviate the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
He suggested that the planned nationwide protests set to begin on August 1st are unwarranted, asserting that the government is already addressing the concerns raised by the protest organizers. "President Tinubu is effectively protesting on behalf of the people," Idris stated, claiming that the administration is responsive to public demands.
The minister highlighted recent government actions, including the distribution of 740 trucks of grains to various states and the introduction of the rice initiative.
Each state is set to receive 20 trucks to ensure that food reaches the most vulnerable populations. Idris noted that the rice being sold at N40,000 represents a significant reduction from market prices, which have soared due to various economic pressures.
Idris also expressed optimism that food prices will decrease as the rainy season progresses, which is expected to enhance agricultural production.
He mentioned ongoing investments in traditional farming and irrigation as part of the government's commitment to improving food security.
Additionally, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo defended the administration's record, arguing that the removal of fuel subsidies is a critical step toward long-term solutions in Nigeria's energy sector.
He pointed to new policies aimed at promoting local trade in crude oil and refined products as means to attract investment and foster job creation.
