The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has claimed that electricity distribution companies are responsible for replacing phased-out Unistar prepaid meters in their service areas.

This announcement comes amid growing consumer concerns regarding the transition, particularly following Ikeja Electric Plc's decision to discontinue support for these meters, effective November 14, 2024.

The phase-out is attributed to essential technological upgrades and issues with the Token Identifier rollover.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ondaje Ijagwu, the FCCPC’s Director of Special Duties and Strategic Communication, acknowledged the anxiety among consumers about potential costs associated with replacing their meters.

He emphasized that the FCCPC's priority is to ensure that these costs do not fall on consumers during this transition.

Ijagwu further highlighted the commission's commitment to preventing arbitrary estimated billing practices, which have become a significant concern due to inadequate communication from distribution companies about the phase-out process.

He stated, “We cannot allow consumers to be unfairly charged or placed on estimated billing. This would be a violation of existing regulations.”

To address these issues, the FCCPC is engaging with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency.

Additionally, the FCCPC plans to enhance consumer education regarding their rights related to metering and billing. Ijagwu reiterated the importance of informing consumers to prevent exploitation during this critical period.
