Bank Staff Threaten to Shut Down Due to Attacks

Edith Omolade Fasehun

Following attacks on some commercial bank locations, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) has threatened to suspend the services of all of its members nationwide.

Additionally, it declared that the pullout would continue until the security of all bank premises was ensured, and the attacks on its employees were resolved.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mr. Mohammed Sheikh, the general secretary of NUBIFIE, expressed shock over recent attacks on bank employees who were not properly protected by security forces.

Sheikh urged the Federal Government, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other stakeholders to work to alleviate the hardship caused by the modification of the cash withdrawal policy.

He also pleaded with Nigerians who were unable to access their bank deposits to be understanding. He further went on to urge the Central Bank of Nigeria to examine the cash withdrawal policy, which has had an impact on the operations of over 200,000 Point of Sales firms in Nigeria.

Emefiele and Buhari

In a related development, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has been hosted by President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja.

The meeting is taking place just hours after the Supreme Court decided to halt the February 10 deadline for the continued use of three older naira notes on Wednesday.

Remember that a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Okoro unanimously upheld an interim injunction following an ex parte petition filed by the governments of Zamfara, Kogi, and Kaduna.

The Federal Government and the Apex Bank were also ordered by the Supreme Court not to follow through with the deadline until the outcome of the hearing on February 15 was known.

The conclusion of the meeting is still unknown, but the visit by the head of the central bank is related to the Supreme Court's decision.
