The US has congratulated Nigerian President-elect Bola Tinubu and citizens following the just-concluded general elections.

"This competitive election represents a new period for Nigerian politics and democracy," US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a statement.

But, the State Department admitted that several Nigerians and political parties were upset with the way the polls were handled because of technological issues that stoked allegations of fraud.

Before the 11 March gubernatorial elections, it urged the electoral body to make progress on the issues raised, stating that Nigerians had a right to expect them to do better.

Also, the US advised all sides to steer clear of "violence or inflammatory rhetoric at this crucial time" and attempt to settle any differences through the judicial system.

With 37% of the vote, Mr. Tinubu, 70, was proclaimed the victor of the election on February 25 on Wednesday, but the opposition parties have challenged the results.

Peter Obi, the third-placed Labour Party candidate for president, has threatened to sue to overturn the results.
