Cocoa is one of the cash crops that brings foreign exchange to Ghana. For Years, cocoa farms have existed in the country. Some farmer have raised the concern to the Government that now, Cocoa farm are being turned into palm nut farm for palm oil making since there is more money in palm oil production.
In an interview by GBC with one of the cocoa farmers, Madam Victoria Senyo said Cocoa do not benefit from the cocoa sector. Fertilizers for the Cocoa farm provided by Government are expensive making it difficult to purchase. For this reason they had decided to divert for palm oil. She also pleaded with the Government to at least make farmers have a feel of what is produced from cocoa.
“I am a Cocoa farmer; my father was a Cocoa farmer and my grandfather was. Our predecessors benefited from Cocoa but we get no benefit. We are not paid when we sell the beans. Making it easy for cocoa farmers to switch to palm oil production. Some farmers have not even tasted chocolate due to the fact they can not afford these end products of cocoa. If Government does not intervene cocoa production will stop".
