Channels on WhatsApp is described as a simple, reliable, and private way for people and organizations to receive important updates.
A video shared online by Meta showcases the potential use of Channels for sharing race results, soccer match outcomes, weather and traffic updates, as well as cooking or home repair tips.
Meta stated that while private messaging remains WhatsApp's priority, users have been requesting a feature like Channels for a long time. WhatsApp is widely recognized for its end-to-end encryption, which ensures privacy and security.
Meta is also considering the possibility of providing encrypted channels for groups such as nonprofits or health organizations that require heightened security.
Channels function as a one-way broadcast tool, allowing account administrators to send text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. The launch partners for this feature include the International Rescue Committee, the World Health Organization, FC Barcelona, and Manchester City football clubs.
Meta plans to roll out Channels gradually and expand its availability in the coming months.
