Several East African countries experienced internet disruptions on Sunday due to reported faults on the East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and SEACOM cables, according to internet monitoring groups.

Tanzania and the French Island of Mayotte faced significant impacts, while Mozambique and Malawi saw moderate effects.

Safaricom, Kenya's largest telecom operator, activated redundancy measures to minimize service interruptions, though subscribers may experience reduced speeds.

This incident follows previous internet outages in West African countries in March, attributed to damage to subsea cables critical for telecommunications data transmission.

Repair costs for the affected digital infrastructure companies are estimated to reach approximately $8 million, highlighting the significant challenges posed by such disruptions.
