The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has said on Thursday in Paris that it would not be commenting publicly on athlete Favour Ofili's registration status at this time.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ofili gœdisclosed late on Tuesday that she had found out she was not enrolled for the current Olympic Games' 100-meter event.
Following this, there have been a number of responses. The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has demanded explanations and promised to impose severe penalties on anyone found to be at fault.
Furthermore, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) insisted that Ofili's name was one of those it submitted to the NOC for Team Nigeria's sprint event registration.
However, NOC Public Relations Officer Tony Nezianya has emphasised that the committee would remain silent for the time being and that they anticipate the AFN to take a stand on the issue.
According to NAN, Ofili qualified for both races but was only entered for the 200-meter race, sparking debate about the propriety of that action. (NAN)
