Raphael Guerreiro, a left back for Borussia Dortmund, has joined Bayern Munich on a free transfer, the Bavarian club confirmed on Friday.
Guerreiro, 29, joins Bayern after spending seven seasons at Dortmund, where he won two German Cups. Guerreiro is a Portuguese international. He has a contract with the German champions through 2026.
Guerreiro, a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, will team up once more with Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel, who originally signed the defender for Dortmund while he was in charge of the team.
“When the call came from FC Bayern, my decision was made quickly. It’s an honour for me to play for this big club and I also really appreciate Thomas Tuchel from our time together at Dortmund,” the defender said in a statement.
“I’m a player who always likes to have the ball — it’s about dominating the game and I want to create chances.
“I will do everything to win as many titles as possible. That is the philosophy of FC Bayern.”
Guerreiro is also capable of playing in the midfield, where he was an important source of creativity for Dortmund at the end of the season.
Guerreiro contributed four goals and a league-high 12 assists this season.
According to Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, Rafael Guerreiro has consistently been among the best and most reliable players in the Bundesliga.
After a thrilling final day, Bayern defeated Dortmund to claim the 2022–23 Bundesliga championship on goal differential. They won their 11th straight league championship.
Over the previous ten years, a number of players have transferred from Dortmund to Bayern, including Robert Lewandowski and Mario Goetze.
