According to reports, Finidi George, the embattled Super Eagles coach, has resigned as head coach of Nigeria's senior men's national team.

Finidi's resignation followed the Nigeria Football Federation's (NFF) decision to hire a foreign Technical Adviser to lead the Super Eagles after the national team failed to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic.

“The Executive Committee resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches,” the NFF statement read.

During Finidi's tenure, the Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Benin Republic in Abidjan after drawing 1-1 with South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

The results leave the Super Eagles winless after four games, sitting in fifth place in Group C with three points, putting Nigeria's chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in jeopardy.
The 53-year-old was officially appointed the new Super Eagles coach in May, after Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro, who led Nigeria to second place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. Finidi had been Peseiro's assistant for twenty months.
