After defeating Sao Tome and Principe in their sixth match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualification on Wednesday, Guinea-Bissau has reclaimed first place in Group A.
In a closely contested game, Guinea-Bissau defeated the Islanders 1-0 thanks to a goal from Belgium-based Zinho Gano in the 55th minute.
The first half of the game ended goalless, but ten minutes into the second half, Gano scored to break the tie. With this victory, the Djurtus completed a thorough 1-2 over Sao Tome and Principe, who are currently last in the group.
Guinea-Bissau, led by head coach Baciro Cande, has topped Group A with 10 points after five games, one more than Nigeria.
The Djurtus are now well-positioned to earn their fourth trip to the AFCON thanks to the victory.
The Super Eagles may retake the lead in the group, though, if they triumph over Sierra Leone in their forthcoming game on Sunday in Liberia.
Currently, Sierra Leone is in third place with five points after four matches, closely followed by Nigeria in second place with nine points after four games.
Both the Super Eagles and Guinea-Bissau will qualify for the Ivory Coast 2023 tournament even before playing their final group-stage games if Sierra Leone fails to defeat Nigeria.
