The Kogi State House of Assembly has demanded the immediate sacking of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, over his handling of the corruption case against former Governor Yahaya Bello.
During Monday's plenary session in Lokoja, the state capital, the lawmakers condemned the EFCC's siege to the Kogi State Government Lodge in Abuja last Wednesday, where operatives allegedly attempted to arrest Bello.
The Assembly accused the EFCC of an assassination attempt on both Bello and incumbent Governor Usman Ododo, claiming that gunshots were fired during the arrest attempt.
The matter was raised by Hon. Akus Lawal, representing Ankpa 1 State Constituency, and seconded by Hon. Jacob Olawunmi of Ijumu State Constituency.
Several lawmakers criticized the EFCC's approach, with Hon. Abu Jibril of Ajaokuta State constituency calling for the chairman's removal and prosecution for allegedly attempting to kill Governor Ododo.
Hon. Bode Ogunmola, representing Ogori/Magongo State Constituency, argued that the governor's lodge should have been respected by the EFCC operatives.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Suleiman AbdulRazak, alleged that EFCC officials were begging Bello to let them pretend he was arrested, calling it an embarrassing act that showed the agency was acting on a script written by the former governor's political enemies.
The lawmakers concluded that the EFCC had an agenda different from fighting corruption, as revealed by its approach to Bello's arrest, and called on President Bola Tinubu to remove the chairman to save the nation from further embarrassment.
