The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has criticized former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello for evading trial over an alleged N80.2bn fraud.

The acting Zonal Director of the EFCC's Benin Zonal Command, Effa Okim, expressed frustration during a visit to the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Asaba.

Bello, declared wanted by the EFCC and placed on a watchlist by the Nigerian Immigration Service, has failed to appear in court for his arraignment, prompting concerns about the integrity of the justice system.

Okim stated, "The shame is on all of us. This politically-exposed person is acting in a drama, and we are all here wanting to ask questions! The shame is our own shame!" He emphasized that while the EFCC could arrest Bello, systemic issues and political shielding have hindered their efforts.

Okim highlighted the moral implications of Bello's actions, questioning the absence of public and governmental pressure on the ex-governor to submit to legal proceedings. He called for a unified media stance to demand Bello’s accountability, stressing that the ongoing situation damages Nigeria's international image.

\\The Chairman of the NUJ Delta State Council, Churchill Oyowe, assured the EFCC of journalists' support in addressing the issue.
