President Bola Tinubu will leave Abuja on Saturday, July 20, and travel to Accra, Ghana to take part in the sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union (AU), the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), the Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and the African Union Member-States.
According to a statement released by the president's spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Friday. As the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will address the gathering on the status of regional integration across various African countries, highlighting the successes and difficulties faced by West Africa since the last meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, in July 2023.
He noted that the "2024 Report on the State of the Community," which would focus on peace, regional security, governance, economic integration, humanitarian and social development, energy, mining, and agriculture, will be presented by the ECOWAS President and Chairman.
The AU's 2024 theme is, "Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century."
The June/July summits were replaced in 2017 by the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, which serves as the main platform for the AU and the RECs to coordinate and integrate their activities in implementing the continental integration agenda.
The agenda topics in Accra include encouraging collaboration among regional economic communities to expedite integration and assessing the AU's early warning and conflict prevention mechanisms. The conference will conclude with the adoption of a declaration.
After the meeting, President Tinubu—accompanied by high-ranking government officials—will return to the country.
