President Bola Tinubu has signed bills creating two new regional development commissions. The two bills are the North West Development Commission (NWDC), sponsored by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, and the South East Development Commission (SEDC), sponsored by the Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu.
The two bills were passed by both chambers in June and delivered to the president for signing.
President Tinubu signed the bills on Tuesday, according to Mr Kalu, who announced the news on social media.
The NWDC is responsible for the development of seven North-West states: Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, and Kaduna.
The SEDC oversees five South-east states: Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Enugu, and Anambra.
The signing of these two bills into law comes amid calls for the reduction of government agencies in order to cut down the overall cost of governance of the country.
President Tinubu previously announced plans to implement the Oransaye Report on the review of ministries, departments, and agencies.
In February, the president constituted an eight-member committee to review the report and provide its findings to the government for consideration.
The committee, headed by George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, was given a 12-week deadline to ensure that essential legislative amendments and administrative restructuring were effectively implemented. However, five months have passed with no update on the report's implementation.
