The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the state election inconclusive due to cancellation and overvoting in some Local Government Areas.
On April 15, the electoral commission conducted a supplementary election. Idris, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, scored 409,225 votes, defeating Aminu Bande of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 360,940 votes.
Not content with the election outcome, Bande approached the tribunal, alleging over-voting in some polling units and questioning Idris's eligibility.
The tribunal deducted 1,735 votes from APC, and over 900 votes were subtracted from PDP’s results. However, these deductions did not impact Idris's election.
Unhappy with the judgement, Bande sought recourse in the court of appeal, which affirmed the governor’s election.
Bande pursued the appeal further to the apex court.
