A pro-democracy organization commonly known as the Conscience of Democracy in Nigeria has publicly criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for its role in Nigeria's ongoing economic difficulties and attributed the current crisis to the party's governance during its 16 years in power.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday, Adamu Kabir Matazu, the group's leader, asserted that the PDP's history of mismanagement and corruption has significantly contributed to the economic challenges facing the nation today.
He emphasized that despite the PDP's control over 13 states, there has been no noticeable improvement in governance, questioning the party's ability to demonstrate any positive outcomes in the states it governs.
Matazu also took aim at the PDP's Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum, for endorsing a planned nationwide protest against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
He characterized this protest as a potential threat to national stability, suggesting it could incite violence and further turmoil in the country.
The group urged Nigerians to reject the protest and called for an investigation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and appropriate action from the Department of State Services (DSS).
In his remarks, Matazu stated, “While President Bola Tinubu’s administration is currently in power, the groundwork for the economic conditions we face today was established during the PDP's lengthy rule. Those in the PDP need to acknowledge their part in the current cost of living crisis.”
He further criticized the PDP's governance record, asserting that the party has not effectively managed the states it controls and has instead perpetuated a culture of corruption, where resources are misappropriated by influential figures. Matazu concluded by rallying support against the protest, framing it as an attempt to undermine the government and destabilize Nigeria.
