The Labour Party has expressed its support for Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso's recent offer to serve as a running mate to Peter Obi in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
This development comes nearly two years after discussions between the Labour Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) regarding a potential merger faltered due to leadership disputes between Obi and Kwankwaso.
In a video shared on social media, Kwankwaso conveyed his willingness to partner with Obi, contingent upon certain conditions being met.
He emphasized his political stand, stating, “I’m bigger than Peter Obi politically; I’m his elder brother, I’m a PhD holder, I performed better than him when I was the governor of my state.” Despite this assertion, he indicated openness to discussions with Obi, provided that trust could be established.
During the 2023 elections, Peter Obi secured approximately 6.1 million votes, finishing in third place, while Kwankwaso garnered around 1.5 million votes, placing fourth.
Kwankwaso has been vocal in his criticism of the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu, particularly regarding economic policies that have adversely affected Nigerians.
Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the Labour Party, welcomed Kwankwaso's renewed interest in collaboration but cautioned against any implications of superiority based on political experience or educational qualifications.
He reiterated the party's commitment to good governance and encouraged Kwankwaso to focus on unity rather than division.
Farouk remarked on the shifting political landscape since the last elections, suggesting that collaboration between Obi and Kwankwaso could be beneficial for opposing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, he acknowledged that the current government would likely resist any attempts to form a united front against it.
