During a press conference in Awka, the Labour party's Chairman, Chidi Chinwuba and the Secretary, Onyeka Aghadiuno announced the Party's intention to boycott the upcoming Local Government Elections scheduled for September 28, 2024 in Anambra East Local Government Area.
In their statement, the Labour Party leaders urged the public to disregard any candidate lists published by the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) that include LP candidates.
They asserted that these lists were unauthorized and did not originate from the party, as no primaries had been conducted to nominate candidates, nor had any names been submitted to ANSIEC.
The party officials called on ANSIEC to remove any individuals falsely claiming to represent the LP in the elections. They warned that legal action would be pursued if the commission proceeded with publishing any names associated with the LP.
The statement emphasized the party's disassociation from the electoral process, declaring, “The Labour Party Anambra East Chapter wishes to disassociate itself from the September 28 LG elections in the state.”
They further cautioned the public that anyone engaging with individuals listed as LP candidates does so at their own risk, as the party would not be held responsible for any consequences arising from such dealings.
The LP's statement also criticized ANSIEC for allegedly attempting to involve the party in what they described as a compromised election process, labeling those responsible as “mischief makers” aiming to mislead the citizens of Anambra East LGA.
Additionally, the LP disclosed that it is currently challenging the election process in court, reinforcing its position of non-participation in the upcoming elections.
ANSIEC Chairperson Genevieve Osakwe had previously announced the final list of candidates for the council polls, assuring the electorate that the elections would be conducted fairly and transparently.
