INEC Releases Details of Edo Governorship Candidates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Saturday, released the forms and details of candidates from various political parties vying for the Edo State governorship election slated for September 21.

These particulars were exhibited at the INEC office in Aduwawa, Benin City, and in all 18 local government offices across the state.

During a visit to the Oredo Local Government secretariat, our correspondent observed the list displayed on the notice board.

Timidi Wariowei, the state INEC Head of Voters Education and Publicity, explained that the publication of these details aligns with electoral regulations, allowing both political parties and the public to access information about the candidates and their running mates.

He stated that in adherence to the law on March 30, 2024, INEC's Edo State Office and its 18 local government offices have exhibited Form EC9, containing the personal information of the 17 candidates and their deputies, including their credentials.

And he noted that this action has been taken in accordance with electoral regulations, and interested parties can visit any of the local government offices to review the list.

In a letter dated Wednesday, March 27, 2024, the National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, instructed the Edo INEC to publish these details.

The letter mentioned, "Following the conclusion of party primaries, 17 political parties have submitted their candidates' nomination forms for the Edo State governorship election before the March 24, 2024, deadline, when the dedicated portal automatically closed down.

"The personal details of the gubernatorial candidates and their running mates will be made public on Saturday, March 30, 2024, one week after the nomination submission deadline, as stipulated in Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The letter further noted that the commission will publish the personal details by displaying copies of Form EC9, including all academic qualifications and other submitted documents by each candidate, at the state headquarters and the 18 local government offices across Edo State.
