Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was made with the full knowledge and approval of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
El-Rufai disclosed this during an interview with the BBC Hausa service, emphasizing his tradition of consulting Buhari on significant political decisions.
El-Rufai explained that he sought Buhari's counsel before finalizing his departure from the APC. According to him, the consultation took place on a Friday, during which he informed Buhari of his plans and requested his prayers and blessings. El-Rufai stated that Buhari granted both.
Reflecting on their relationship, he noted that even during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State, he sought Buhari’s input on key decisions, including appointments for commissioners.
The former governor announced his defection to the SDP earlier this week via a statement on his verified Facebook page. He cited irreconcilable differences with the APC leadership under Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and accused the party of deviating from its founding principles.
El-Rufai described his move as part of a broader effort to align with a political platform that reflects his values and vision for Nigeria’s future.
His defection has sparked significant political reactions. The APC dismissed concerns over his departure, with figures such as Senator Shehu Sani suggesting it would not weaken the party. Meanwhile, SDP Chairman Shehu Musa Gabam welcomed El-Rufai’s entry into the party, describing it as a boost to its ranks and a sign of its growing influence.
