The former governor of Imo State, Mr. Emeka Ihedioha, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after being a member of the party for 26 years.

As a founding member of the PDP, he cited a difference in "personal beliefs" as part of his reason for leaving the party. He stated that the party is no longer able to carry out internal amendments, enforce its own rules, or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In a letter addressed to the party's chairman in the Mbutu Ward of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, he said, "In light of the foregoing, I am compelled to offer my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party, effective immediately."

He described the decision as "difficult" but the right one, and restated his commitment to working towards strengthening the country's democracy.

He expressed his gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve and stated that he has benefited from the party at different levels.
