During a joint meeting of the party's state executives and local government chairmen held in Umuahia, the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) announced its decision not to participate in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 2, 2024.

The APC attributed its decision to what it termed a lack of official communication from the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC).

Engr. Sterling Uruakpa, the state assistant secretary and acting publicity secretary, emphasized that the party would not rely on information disseminated through social media channels. He insisted that ABSIEC must utilize proper communication methods to provide timely updates regarding the elections.

Uruakpa stated, “The All Progressives Congress is the ruling political party in Nigeria and the biggest party in Africa and will not tolerate any form of contempt or disrespect from ABSIEC.”

He urged the electoral body to adhere to due process, ensure inclusivity, and create a level playing field for all political parties to foster trust among stakeholders.

During a meeting with political parties, ABSIEC Chairman Prof. George Chima outlined a timetable for the elections, which includes a series of deadlines for party primaries and candidate submissions.

He acknowledged the short notice for these elections but assured stakeholders of the commission's integrity and dedication to a credible electoral process.

Chima reiterated that all political parties must comply with the established guidelines to ensure a transparent election. He also called upon all stakeholders to engage constructively in the electoral process, emphasizing that this election should not be business as usual.
