Woman Faces Trial for Allegedly Raining Punch on Police Inspector

Kafayat Akeem, 48, was brought before a Chief Magistrate's Court in Osogbo, Osun State, for allegedly assaulting Inspector Comfort Ibitoye, a police officer, while they were on the job.

During a dispute at the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Osun State Police Command in Osogbo, it was alleged that Akeem punched Ibitoye in the neck, causing her injury.

Lagos Local News gathered that the defendant went to the police station in the Housing Estate area of Osogbo to see her husband, who was one of several people arrested for allegedly kidnapping a victim.

Her husband was taken into custody on suspicion of working with others to kidnap a man named Apara with the intention of getting him to sign a land contract.

It was learned that on January 4, when the woman went to the station, there was a fight at the station entrance over where the woman passed.

The defendant was reportedly told by a senior officer to take a different route, but she denied the order. As a result, the woman and the female police officer had a rowdy conversation.

Ibitoye was said to have been punched by the visitor, who also allegedly tore up her uniform.

“Kafayat Akeem, on January 4, 2023 at approximately 10am, at Housing Estate area Osogbo, Osun State, in the Osogbo Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Inspector Ibitoye Comfort and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 356 of the Criminal Code, Cap 3, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002,” reads the charge that was brought against her.

“You, Kafayat Akeem, on the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did unlawfully assault one Inspector Ibitoye Comfort by punching her, inflicting some injuries on her neck and tore her cloth and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“You did unlawfully assault one Inspector Ibitoye Comfort and obstruct her from performing her lawful duties and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 356 (II) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

“On the same date, time, place and in the aforementioned Magisterial District, you did conduct yourself in a manner likely to cause breach of public peace in Osogbo and its environs to fear and/or panic and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II Laws of Osun state of Nigeria, 2002.”

The person who was accused denied the allegations and the defense attorney, Najite Okobe, pleaded with the court to grant the woman broad bail.

Also, John Idoko, the police prosecutor, asked the court to grant bail according to its discretion.

The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N50,000 with one surety in the same amount by Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara. The case was adjourned until January 9 for mention.
