Cristian Munduate addressed the press in Maiduguri on Friday, August 18, ahead of the commemoration of World Humanitarian Day on Saturday, August 19.
Munduate expressed concern over the lack of proper prosecution and punishment for bandits who commit various crimes against humanity.
"It concerns me that despite their assaults and killings of children and women, abductions, and rapes, bandits are not brought to court," she lamented.
"It concerns me that there are no laws applied to prosecute and penalize them," continued the UNICEF Representative, emphasizing, "If there's a legal process, then there's a need for proper legal punishment for these individuals."
She noted, "We have international laws as well as a legal system," further stating, "Certainly, the country (Nigeria) has its national laws, and these laws must be enforced to prosecute and penalize bandits."
Munduate criticized the method of relocating internally displaced persons (IDPs) back to their ancestral communities, pointing out that it hasn't resolved the problems for most of the relocated IDPs.
She proposed that the relocation process should be better planned, allowing the relocated IDPs to effectively rebuild their lives economically.
