Akinteye Babatunde, the Senate President of the association, conveyed their disapproval in a statement issued on Wednesday.
He condemned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's claim as a "baseless assertion" that not only tarnishes the reputation of the diligent and dedicated student community but also lacks any empirical basis.
In response to the accusations, Babatunde noted the need for a fair assessment of the student community, urging against a broad-brush characterization that could unfairly stigmatize the majority based on the actions of a few.
On Monday, Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the EFCC, expressed his concerns about the alleged high involvement of students in cyber crimes.
Olukoyede remarked, "It is worrisome that seven out of ten students today are involved in cyber crimes. These are the youths we are preparing to be leaders of tomorrow. The media should not relent in enlightening them on the evils of such criminal practices."
He urged the media to play a significant role in educating the youth about the consequences of engaging in internet fraud.
“Our students have consistently demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, and community service. To label the majority of them as criminals is not only an injustice but also an irresponsible generalisation.
“We believe in the principle of innocent until proven guilty, and sweeping statements that paint an entire demographic with a broad brush are not only damaging but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes. It is essential to address the issue of crime without unfairly stigmatizing an entire group of students who are working diligently towards their educational and personal development.”
It, however, urged the anti-graft boss to provide concrete evidence supporting such a statement or retract the statement immediately, noting that it “believes in constructive dialogue and collaboration to address any concerns related to criminal activities.”
Babatunde reiterated NANS’ commitment to fostering a positive and conducive environment for learning, growth, and development.
