A female Lance Corporal shot and killed an army captain on Sunday at a checkpoint in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State.
The female soldier who was on duty enforcing the curfew set by the Adamawa administration after hoodlums broke into a government warehouse and stole many items, including medications intended to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The female soldier known as Lance Corporal Nkiru shot and killed the captain at the Fire Service Roundabout in the state's capital,for attempting to step in during an altercation she had with civilians at the checkpoint.
Even though the people driving back to their homes during the curfew hours identified themselves as workers on essential duties, the woman insisted that they turn around and stood her grounds.
“Some people stopped at the check point and explained themselves as workers on essential duties but the female soldier insisted they must turn back. A captain came forward to intervene. Unfortunately she had already cocked her rifle, so she just fired and killed him accidentally,” a security officer said.
The suspect was immediately apprehended and taken away by soldiers while the victim was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Yola, where it was determined that he had passed away.
According to information obtained by reporters, the female soldier has been accused of repeatedly intimidating civilians and cocking her gun at the slightest provocation.
When DAILY TRUST correspondents visited the headquarters of 23 Armoured Brigade Yola for confirmation, the Commander, Brigadier General Muhammad Gambo, sent a message that journalists must seek appointment in writing before he could speak to them.
