After a painted commercial bus collided with another bus owned by Lagos Bus Service Limited in the Ifako inward Ogudu area of the State on Wednesday, workers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) managed to save seven passengers who were suffering from various degrees of injuries.
Due to the severity of the collision brought on by the driver who lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding, the commercial bus somersaulted twice and the driver died instantly.
The commercial bus was travelling from Lagos Island to Ogudu when the accident happened, according to a preliminary investigation, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of Lastma, reported in a news release.
“LASTMA has carried out a series of enlightenment campaigns warning motorists particularly commercial bus drivers against overspeeding but to adhere strictly to speed limit signs erected by government across the State”
When hoodlums learned that the commercial driver had passed away and that his body was next to the overturned commercial bus, they set fire to the bus operated by the Lagos State Bus Service Limited. Other emergency responders, such as Traffic Police Officers, had been working alongside LASTMA officials at the accident scene.
However, Mr Bolaji Oreagba, the general manager of Lastma, cautioned members of the public, particularly street urchins, to refrain from enforcing the law at any accident scene and to instead let the proper authorities handle the situation.
