Nigerian medical doctor Julius Oni has shared his motivations for leaving his position at Johns Hopkins University in the United States to return to Nigeria after 25 years.

In a recent video that has gained a lot of attention, Oni detailed his decision-making process and the sacrifices he made, including selling his properties and taking a leave of absence from his job.

Oni stated, “I reverse JAPA from the US to Nigeria. Well…six weeks ago, I relocated from the US to Nigeria. I took a leave of absence from my job at Johns Hopkins, sold my house, sold my cars, packed my bags alongside my lovely wife and beautiful children, and moved after 25 years of living in the USA.”

Oni emphasized that he believes Nigerian patients deserve access to high-quality healthcare.

He remarked on the skepticism he faces regarding his decision but affirmed his conviction: “I happen to believe that Nigerian patients deserve great care too.”

To further this mission, he has established DOC Medical Nigeria to provide comprehensive musculoskeletal care locally and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad.

He highlighted the positive response to his initiative, noting that patients are traveling from various regions, including Ghana and the UK, to access orthopedic care in Nigeria.

“I am humbled to say that people are coming from near and far,” he said.
