The Enugu State Government has announced that it will begin enforcing its anti-noise pollution policy on November 15, 2024.
Chief Uche Anya, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), made this announcement at a stakeholders' conference held at the state secretariat. The participants included representatives from relaxation centers, religious organizations, and other stakeholders.
According to the ECTDA Chairman, the “zero noise policy” aims to address the widespread noise pollution issues in the Enugu state metropolis. He emphasized that the initiative aims to create an eco-friendly environment while respecting the rights of all Enugu residents.
The policy will involve a strict ban on open-air music performances by bars and clubs in designated residential areas. The enforcement will also target loud religious gatherings, roadside parking, and obstruction of motorways for personal activities. Anya highlighted the significant impact of noise pollution on the residents, including sleep disturbances and the encroachment of negative activities into neighborhoods.
In their commitment to a more peaceful and serene Enugu, the ECTDA has ordered all religious and leisure facilities to remove outdoor public address systems. Anya emphasized that the agency would handle the situation with humanity, focusing on improving the living conditions in the state and serving the interests of its residents without causing harm.
Religious leaders, Rev. Carley Ibekwe and Alhaji Sariki Sambo, expressed their readiness to comply with the agency's directives in their separate statements
