The World Bank has recently approved three loan requests totaling $1.57 billion to support Nigeria's efforts in enhancing human capital and addressing climate resilience.

The decision was made on September 26, 2024 to improve the health services for women, children, and adolescents while simultaneously improving infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of climate change.

In a statement issued on Monday, the World Bank outlined that the funding will be allocated across various initiatives. A portion of the financing—$500 million—will focus on improving governance in the education and health sectors, addressing systemic issues that have hindered effective service delivery.

Another $570 million is designated for the Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Programme, which seeks to enhance healthcare services and reduce maternal and child mortality rates.

The remaining $500 million will support the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project and improve dam safety and irrigation systems to combat climate-related challenges such as floods and droughts.

Dr. Ndiamé Diop, the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, emphasized that this investment is crucial for improving access to quality services, particularly for vulnerable populations, including women and girls.

He noted that effective governance and resource management are essential to ensure that these funds translate into tangible benefits for those most in need.
