The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has called on residents to adhere to a recent court ruling that restricts protests to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

This appeal was made during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, following a meeting of the FCT Security Council aimed at addressing the implications of a nationwide protest that began that day.

Wike emphasized the importance of following the court's directive, which allows protests but mandates that they take place solely within the designated stadium area.

He highlighted an intelligence report suggesting that some individuals planned to engage in destructive behavior under the guise of protest, which could potentially lead to violence and loss of life. Wike assured the public that security agencies would take necessary measures to prevent such incidents.

The minister expressed concern over attempts by some protesters to move to Eagle Square, which he noted was in violation of the court order.

He reiterated the need for all citizens to respect the rule of law, stating, “This country belongs to all of us, and we must operate within the framework of the law.”

Wike also cautioned against participating in protests that could lead to chaos, referencing recent violent outbreaks in other states. He appealed to demonstrators to allow the government time to address their grievances constructively.

In a more serious allegation, Wike revealed that a senator was reportedly involved in financing the protests, suggesting that this individual had coordinated with security agencies to provide resources to demonstrators.

The minister commended those in Abuja who chose not to engage in protests that could lead to unrest, assuring residents that the government is committed to resolving ongoing challenges.
