The United States government has officially repatriated $52.88 million linked to former Nigerian Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, marking a significant step in the fight against corruption.
The agreement was signed on Friday at the Federal Ministry of Justice Headquarters in Abuja, led by U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills, Jr., and Nigeria's Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi.
Fagbemi explained that the funds resulted from the forfeiture of Galactica assets associated with Alison-Madueke and her associates.
He emphasized that this development underscores the commitment of both nations to combat corruption and promote accountability in governance.
The Attorney-General also outlined a robust framework to ensure that the repatriated funds are utilized transparently for national development projects, with $50 million allocated for rural electrification through the World Bank and $2.88 million designated for enhancing Nigeria's justice system via the International Institute of Justice.
