The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has voiced strong opposition to the recent increase in petroleum pump prices, expressing concern that this hike will exacerbate poverty levels among workers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo called on the Federal Government to reverse this decision immediately and to implement policies aimed at strengthening the naira.

The TUC criticized the hike, which was enacted without prior consultation with key stakeholders, as a blatant disregard for the welfare of Nigerians, particularly the working class who are most affected by such economic measures.

Osifo warned that the sudden increases in fuel and electricity costs could lead to heightened hardship and potential social unrest.

In addition to the fuel price increase, the TUC condemned a staggering 250 percent hike in electricity tariffs, emphasizing that such essential services are crucial for the survival of the poorest segments of society.

The union questioned the rationale behind imposing these burdens on ordinary citizens while those in power continue to enjoy increased allocations and affluence.

Osifo reiterated that the TUC has long proposed strategies to bolster the naira and ensure that every kobo spent by Nigerians holds value.

He expressed deep concern over the timing and scale of the recent price hikes, which, in the absence of meaningful social security measures, reflect a lack of empathy for the struggles faced by everyday Nigerians.
