President Bola Tinubu has officially inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC).
On June 15, the Council was inaugurated in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja under the leadership of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
At his inauguration, the President pledged to keep the country's economy growing.
He gave the council the assignment to collaborate with other governmental entities in order to advance Nigeria's economic development.
Tinubu emphasized the significant challenge of expanding the country's economy and asked the NEC members to faithfully carry out their responsibilities.
The President urged governors to work together and leverage local governments to hasten infrastructure development and address pressing national issues.
He said, “You and I asked for it. We campaigned for it. We even danced for it. So, we have no reason to complain. Members of this country are behind us. They want reforms and they want them quickly. You here are stakeholders…. Collaboration is not a crime. Please, let us do so.”
The 1999 Constitution's provisions established the economic council.
The council is in charge of advising the president on the Federation's economic matters and meets once a month.
The council also offers the guidance required for coordinating the government's initiatives in economic planning or program development.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, along with the 36 governors of the nation's states, make up its membership.
