The president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has "killed tribal and religious politics in Nigeria," according to Joe Igbokwe, the special adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on drainage and water resources. Ethno-religious politics "will fizzle out shortly," according to Igbokwe.
Igbokwe gained political fame after Tinubu appointed him while he was Lagos State's governor. Igbokwe served as the APC's spokesperson in Lagos State for a prolonged period of time.
Even though Tinubu resigned from office in 2007, every subsequent governor of Lagos State has included Igbokwe in their administration.
Igbokwe took to his Facebook page today to write that "They are still celebrating Christians protest votes abi? Asiwaju has killed ethnic and religious politics here in Nigeria and it will fizzle out soon."
According to this publication, many people thought Obi's political structure couldn't win a presidential election on February 25 let alone a local government election outside of Anambra State. They assumed that a sizable portion of his support base was restricted to the internet.
Obi's Labour Party, however, outmanoeuvred the main opposition parties in many states including Lagos and Abuja and garnered over 6 million votes despite its lack of structure.
Some political experts think Obi's persistent Christian lobbying on his behalf was successful. A number of pastors publicly supported him and urged thousands of their followers to oppose the Muslim-Muslim APC ticket. Kashim Shettima, the incoming vice president, is a Muslim like Tinubu.
