A coalition of timber industry associations has urged the Lagos State Government to manage timber operations in the waterways effectively before proceeding with any rumored eviction of the Okobaba Timber Business.
In a statement signed by prominent members such as Mr. Akinte Gabriel and High Chief Cyrus Olopele, the coalition expressed concerns regarding the potential eviction, highlighting that the government's current approach has sidelined key stakeholders in the timber sector, allowing only one association to represent the interests of all dealers.
They emphasized the necessity for collective agreements that include all parties involved and criticized the government's lack of inclusivity, which they believe is crucial for maintaining a peaceful business environment.
They noted that the timber industry in Lagos has thrived on harmonious relationships among stakeholders for nearly ninety years.
The Okobaba Timber Business is recognized as the largest timber market in West Africa, sourcing materials from various states. Historically, ownership and roles within this market have been respected, contributing to the industry's success through inclusive cooperation.
Currently, tensions have arisen due to the government's actions, which have created a divisive atmosphere. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was previously established to facilitate the relocation of the Okobaba Timber Industry to Timber Villa in Agbowa/Ikosi/Owu; however, the site has been designated for a single association, marginalizing others.
