Three Years after Its Conception, Buhari Introduces Agenda 2050

Urges incoming government to implement the Agenda.

The Nigeria Agenda 2050 was unveiled on Wednesday by President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (ret. ), to boost real GDP growth by 7%, adding 165 million new jobs, and bringing down the estimated 83 million people living in poverty in Nigeria to 2.1 million in 2050.

The launch took place in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja just before the start of this week's Federal Executive Council meeting.

It occurs almost three months after the National Economic Council endorsed the Agenda and about seven weeks after the FEC approved the policy document on March 15.

the President said, at the launch, “This vision is a product of a dynamic knowledge-based economy to provide sustainable development by 2050.

“The goal is to increase the per capita income of Nigeria to $33,328 per annum to be placed amongst the world’s top economies by 2050.

“I hope this document will prove useful for subsequent administrations.”

In November 2020, Buhari initially established the National Steering Committee for the creation of the Nigeria Agenda 2050 and the Medium-Term National Development Plan 2021–2025.

By 2050, it aims to elevate Nigeria to the position of an Upper Middle-Income Country and then a High-Income Country.

In the meantime, the Council observed a moment of silence in memory of Late Musa Gwadabe, a former minister of employment, labour, and productivity and former minister of solid minerals who passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at the age of 86.

After that, with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, Head of the Civil Service Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, and the President's Chief of Staff Prof. Ibrahim Gambari present, the meeting got down to business.

Also present are the Ministers of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; Science and Technology, Olorunimbe Mamora; Finance, Zainab Ahmed; Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo; Agriculture, Mohammed Abubakar; Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire; Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Pantami; Sports, Sunday Dare, Aviation, Hadi Sirika, Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi; Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and FCT, Mohammed Bello.
