Tensions have erupted in the Bature community of Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State, after operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) allegedly killed the town's youth leader, Eric Faturoti. The incident reportedly occurred during an unlawful raid by NSCDC personnel, sparking outrage among residents.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the operatives, who were heavily armed, attempted to make arrests, which met with resistance from community members. In the ensuing confrontation, Faturoti was allegedly shot and killed. According to an anonymous source, one of the NSCDC operatives claimed to be acting on orders from Olugbenga Atiba, Senior Special Assistant on Security to the Ondo State Governor.

The grieving community has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to investigate the killing and ensure justice is served. They have also threatened to stage protests and block major roads in Odigbo if the government fails to act swiftly. “If no action is taken over this murder, we will be forced to protest and disrupt activities in the area until justice is done,” a resident warned.

However, NSCDC Public Relations Officer, DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, refuted the allegations, describing them as baseless. Aidamenbor explained that the operatives were on a lawful mission to apprehend suspected illegal miners when they were attacked by gunfire from the suspects. In self-defense, the operatives returned fire, which unfortunately resulted in a fatality. "The death occurred during a gun duel, as our operatives were defending themselves from an armed attack," he said.

In response, Olugbenga Atiba denied any involvement in the raid, calling the accusations a smear campaign aimed at discrediting the Aiyedatiwa administration. He clarified that he was not even in Ondo State at the time of the incident and emphasized that his role as the governor's security aide does not grant him authority to order raids. "My office is dedicated to intelligence gathering and ensuring the safety of the people, not instigating violence or raids," Atiba stated.

Atiba assured the community that a thorough investigation would be conducted to uncover the truth. He also urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, promising that anyone found responsible for the death of Faturoti would face justice.
