Good signs for the conduct of local government elections in Anambra State have surfaced with the swearing in of members of the State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo.

Soludo, who executed the function at the Governor’s Lodge, Amaobia, urged them to render nothing short of excellent service to the people of the state.

The commission is headed by Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe as its chairman. The other members of the commission are Barr. Osita Cyril Igbokwe, Sir Chinedu Anthony Nnalue, Mrs. Bernadine Obande, Mr. John Emeka Okeke, and Mrs. Helen Ifeyinwa Umeh.

The scope of the Commission's work is to organise, undertake, and supervise all elections and issues relating to elections to the public offices in the local government councils in the state.

In accordance with the Anambra State Electoral Law 2024, the commission is also responsible for dividing local government areas into a specific number of wards or constituencies as outlined by law for the purpose of the elections to be conducted by the commission.

Civil society organisations (CSOs) and opposition parties in the state have been strongly demanding that the local government elections be held, reminding the governor of his campaign pledge to conduct these elections within six months of his assumption of office.
